Polar Bears live in the Arctic where temperatures can dip up to -58 degrees Fahrenheit temperatures. That’s really really cold! In comparison your refrigerator at home has an average 40°F or below temperature and the freezer is at about 0°F. That should give you a good idea of how cold it is in the Arctic. Yet, polar bears live their quite easily. What’s the secret? It’s the way their body has adapted to living in the icy ecosystem.
See 6 reasons why they can easily live in the arctic,
1. Small Ears
The small and round ears of the Polar Bear prevent less water from entering their bodies when they swim out to sea. Also, the small ears help to conserve body warmth in the sub-zero temperatures.
2. White Fur
The white coloured fur actually camouflages the Polar Bear while it is hunting for its prey. The Polar Bears are also smart to cover their black noses with their paws in order to avoid detection.
3. Blubber
Polar Bears have a thick layer of fat called Blubber which is up to 11cm thick under their skin which acts as an insulator and protects them from the extreme cold.
4. Black Skin
The Skin under the fur is black in color to allow better retention of heat in the body.
5. Hairy Soles
The hair on the soles of the feet protect the soles from the cold. They also help the Polar Bear to walk on the slippery ice and snow without falling.
6. Paw Paddles
Polar Bears are good swimmers and have partially webbed toes on their large front paws. They tend to use these as paddles when they swim & their hind legs are used as rudders.
